Best Practices for Developing a New Elementary School
On March 22, 2014 a six-alarm fire destroyed the James Monroe Elementary School in Edison, leaving a community in distress and 500 students without a school. Over the next two years, the board of education undertook many unfamiliar roles, from crisis management in locating and renovating a temporary facility, to becoming expert in insurance negotiations, passing a school-funding referendum, dealing with a myriad of state approvals, managing the school construction budget and adhering to an immovable deadline all while maintaining safety, security for students and repairing a community. Two and half years later, a new facility stands ready to serve students. This session will explore the best practices and perseverance of the board and its team when faced with an unparalleled crisis.

A Fresh Look at Indoor Air Quality and Energy Savings
Despite the recent focus on energy savings, building systems are designed much the same way today as they have been for decades. Learn how trying to cut energy costs has led to moisture problems as mechanical units are shut down or operations reduced; and the movement to improve indoor air quality has resulted in designs that deliver more outside air into buildings –but there are questions as to whether that actually improves air quality. Discover how your district can reduce energy use, save money and improve air quality with a different design approach.
