Mitigating the Impact of Declining Enrollment in Your District
Declining enrollment in local school distrcts creates significant challenges for many school districts in New Jersey. This decline has been exacerbated by the simultaneous decrease in state funding, often accompanied by a decline in the local tax base. The increased demands for academic improvement, rising costs for such items as health care, wages, transportation, and utilities as well as additional “unfunded” mandates and the 2 percent tax cap levy place a great strain on many districts. This session will focus on exploring possible solutions and strategies that will assist your board in addressing the impact of declining enrollment while maintaining the quality of the education you provide to your students. Consolidation, regionalization, distance learning, sharing services, and “choice” are some of the options that will be explored.

Aligning Your Board Committee Structure to Your Strategic Plan
Are you tired of feeling like your committee work is not effectively or efficiently leading to improved student learning? Are you looking for an alternative that helps you and your board provide oversight and clear direction to your administration, while discouraging micromanagement? For the past three years, the Hillsborough Board of Education has been working collaboratively with its superintendent to develop a committee structure aligned to the district's strategic plan. Legislative Update
Once again, the Legislative Update forum will feature a combination of NJSBA’s traditional forum with the session formerly held by the Garden State Coalition of Schools. It is hoped that this combined session will allow for the participation of a larger number of legislators and possibly other state officials, and provide a larger block of time for workshop participants who may also want to attend other sessions that overlap this popular annual forum. Owing to the larger-than-anticipated turnout we’ve experienced in recent years, this year’s update will also feature a larger room to comfortably accommodate more workshop participants. Please come with your thoughtful questions for what we anticipate will be a great, collegial experience with our elected officials.

Members of the New Jersey State Legislature have been invited to participate.
