TEACHNJ Four Years Later: What Have We Learned?
When the new tenure law, “TEACHNJ,” was adopted in 2012, the Legislature declared its purpose to be “to raise student achievement by improving instruction;” while Gov. Chris Christie announced that it would lead to a dramatic reduction in the time and cost of removing ineffective teachers. This session will address whether TEACHNJ has achieved these goals. Attorneys who have represented school districts in tenure charge cases will discuss their experiences in TEACHNJ arbitration, recent arbitration decisions, and whether the procedures established by TEACHNJ are achieving its stated goals.

Legislative Update
Once again, the Legislative Update forum will feature a combination of NJSBA’s traditional forum with the session formerly held by the Garden State Coalition of Schools. It is hoped that this combined session will allow for the participation of a larger number of legislators and possibly other state officials, and provide a larger block of time for workshop participants who may also want to attend other sessions that overlap this popular annual forum. Owing to the larger-than-anticipated turnout we’ve experienced in recent years, this year’s update will also feature a larger room to comfortably accommodate more workshop participants. Please come with your thoughtful questions for what we anticipate will be a great, collegial experience with our elected officials.

Members of the New Jersey State Legislature have been invited to participate.
