IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ATTENDEES

The NJSBA Workshop 2016 SCHED and mobile app feature the same programming, speaker, and exhibitor information, however, schedules created on SCHED cannot be integrated to the mobile app.

To stay connected throughout Workshop 2016 and have your schedule on your smart device, please download the NJSBA Workshop mobile app available through the Apple App store or Google Play store by searching NJSBA Workshop 2016.

The Workshop app offers an opportunity to actively engage in Workshop throughout the entire event by networking with other attendees, vendors and speakers; posting pictures to the newsfeed, viewing sessions, receiving announcements, getting the most up-to-date event information, earning points and in-app badges and more!

Make sure you select “yes” to receive notifications from Workshop 2016, including minute-to-minute updates, session changes and cancellations as soon as they happen.

REMINDER: Attendance at training sessions, unless pre-registration is required, is first-come basis. Creating an agenda via SCHED or the mobile app does not guarantee a place in the session.

The New Jersey State Board of Education
The New Jersey State Board of Education is appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the State Senate. The State Board adopts administrative code, which sets the rules needed to implement state education law. In addition, the group advises on

Legislative Update
Once again, the Legislative Update forum will feature a combination of NJSBA’s traditional forum with the session formerly held by the Garden State Coalition of Schools. It is hoped that this combined session will allow for the participation of a larger number of legislators and possibly other state officials, and provide a larger block of time for workshop participants who may also want to attend other sessions that overlap this popular annual forum. Owing to the larger-than-anticipated turnout we’ve experienced in recent years, this year’s update will also feature a larger room to comfortably accommodate more workshop participants. Please come with your thoughtful questions for what we anticipate will be a great, collegial experience with our elected officials.

Members of the New Jersey State Legislature have been invited to participate.

Mock Board Meeting
This year, the Mock Board will confront several controversial issues likely to come before your board in the coming school year. You will certainly want to attend this session in order to be better prepared. While the session will follow an agenda like a regular board meeting, the public will have an opportunity to present general school law and labor relations questions to a panel of distinguished school board attorneys. Attendees are invited to bring their school law questions to the professionals!

Attendees will also observe as the Mock Board handles a sensitive issue in executive session to discuss student discipline education, difficult members of the public, social media, transgender students, negotiations, and race.  “Board members” will deliberate appropriate responses to these rising issues. Learning labs following the Mock Board will present an in-depth legal analysis of each of these potentially contentious issues.

The Mock Board and the learning labs will be as informative as they are entertaining.
