Best Practices for Developing a New Elementary School
On March 22, 2014 a six-alarm fire destroyed the James Monroe Elementary School in Edison, leaving a community in distress and 500 students without a school. Over the next two years, the board of education undertook many unfamiliar roles, from crisis management in locating and renovating a temporary facility, to becoming expert in insurance negotiations, passing a school-funding referendum, dealing with a myriad of state approvals, managing the school construction budget and adhering to an immovable deadline all while maintaining safety, security for students and repairing a community. Two and half years later, a new facility stands ready to serve students.
